Integrating Areas

Mike
Integration is a big part of our IDS major. When we integrate our academics we take different areas and integrate them into one. The good thing about IDS is that we learn about three different areas and have knowledge all over. My minors have helped me reach my final goal of graduation because they are all related. I am majoring in Life/Biomedical sciences, and my minors are physical science and health science. The classes for my minor relate to my major because its all science based. Integrating all of my areas is important professionally because people will know that I’m educated in multiple fields which can help to impress an employer. As far as personal development I enjoy the fact that I’m not just putting all my eggs into one basket. I’m spreading out and learning multiple things about multiple areas. I don’t think that my areas can be any better integrated because they are so similar already. Education is something that is an ongoing experience and IDS is giving me the opportunity to pick my areas of education.

When I think about how I have formed integration within my degree, I think about how my previous majors were all in the field of education. Now that I have changed my major to IDS, with areas in education and life/biomedical science, my thinking is that I have used my areas to work toward a common goal. That goal is to in the future become a science educator. My minors and areas are all working collaboratively to form a solid foundation for me to teach science in the middle and high school level. I believe that it is important to integrate your areas and minors to work towards a common goal, through that you will have a better chance of gaining as much information as possible to help you achieve that goal. Overall I am happy with how I have chosen to integrate my education, because I believe that it will provide valuable information that will help me achieve greatness in the future. One way I think I could better integrate my areas/minors would be to add more minors. I wouldn’t want to take away any of the ones that I currently have, simply adding more that would be related to what I want to achieve could give me a better understanding of those fields. Besides adding more to you education is never a bad idea, and no one can ever take that away from you.

  1. Integration means that you integrate different components/areas/disciplines or groups of people into one. One example is the integration in the society, and another example is the IDS major. The IDS major is a great example of integration because the major integrates three disciplines into one.

I have chosen to integrate knowledge from my two main areas, Life & Biomedical Sciences and Behavioral Sciences, and my minor in health science into my major. The reason why I chose to integrate those three areas was because I have the goal and the mindset to attend medical school after college. In my three areas I can take all the required classes that I would be required to have as well as embrace my already present interest for different sciences.

It is important to integrate disciplines within each other because it will give your education a much more open-minded approach. To have an open-minded mindset as well as have the skill of “thinking outside the box” will be helpful in the future when applying for a job. It will hopefully impress my future employer and be a good skill to add on to my personal statement for graduate school. Integration of the IDS major will affect my personal developing as well. I will learn things from different disciplines, and it will help me to see perspectives from different views not only throughout my education but also in my personal life. I think it will change the way I think of different problems.

My areas/minor could not be better integrated since they all links together, due to the fact that they are all based on different types of sciences. I think I found a perfect combination of integration for myself in my IDS major.

  2. John – I also think it would be a good idea to add more minors to the IDS major. My opinion is that if you add more minors to it, then students would get a broader area of study than they already have by being an IDS student. Isn’t that the main point of an IDS degree to get knowledge from various disciplines? By adding more minor would not hurt the degree, rather it would enhance it.

  3. Mike – I also feel that IDS enhances my personal development as well. I really liked your phrasing – “putting all my eggs to the basket”. That is what an IDS degree is all about: Putting all your knowledge together as well as integrate them within each-other.

  4. Jenny,
To be honest with you, that wasn't what I was talking about, but that is even better than what I was thinking. I was saying, adding additional minors to your individual degree. I agree that this is what IDS is about, and that it would be beneficial for the college to add more opportunities for the IDS students. If you had the freedom to add minors to the choices that we are presented with, what would you like to add?
    Keep up the good work.

  5. Integration in an interdisciplinary context involves the evaluation and combination of ideas and knowledge to form a new advancement. In other words, when one integrates they synthesize information. An example of integration would be when a person studies material in the field of criminology, and then studies material in the field of psychology in order to become a criminal psychologist and work in that area.

I haven’t integrated my areas and minor because I am still in school continuing to learn about the areas of criminal justice, health, and business (areas of interest and minor). There really has not been an opportunity that would allow me to integrate these areas at this time in my life, but perhaps after I get my interdisciplinary degree I will find a venture that will allow me to do so.

Integration of my areas if interest and minor are important in terms of professional, academic, and personal development because it will allow me to fully understand the interdisciplinary process, which in turn will allow me to succeed in life after college. For instance, it will assist me in my studies in graduate school, and also in hands-on applications I might be involved in when obtaining a job after school.

My areas and minor can be better integrated with one another probably by studying subjects that would involve at least two of the three. Perhaps something that has to do will criminal justice and business, or health and business, or even something that would involve all three, however I currently am not sure what type of subject that would involve all three.

  6. Andy,
Interesting, it sounds like you have gained a nice understanding of what interdisciplinary is all about. I agree that its probably going to be hard to find a field that will allow you to utilize all three. What would you like to do that would involve utilizing at least two of your areas and or minor?

  7. John,

I recently took a pharmacology class during summer term, which I found very interesting. Perhaps I could take more classes on that subject with the goal of getting into the pharmacology business. That would collaborate my health major and business minor.

  8. Mike,

I agree with you that integration of my areas and minor is very important on a professional basis, which will allow people to know I'm educated in multiple fields. This can impress possible employers or members of graduate school admissions office, and show them that I am skilled in many areas.

  9. Integration- A combination of different studies, areas, beliefs, or disciplines. An example of integration is the major of Interdisciplinary Studies. I picked this because you inetergrated three fields of studies that you like to create an opportunity for your future.

I intergrated fields that catch my attention which are Behavioral and Social Sciences, Commerce with my minor in Health. I chose these because there is always opportunity in the medical field but I would like to deal with more of the business aspect of it.

I feel like it;s important to integrate other fields of study with each other and gives you a variety of knowledge in different fields. Also personally I feel like integrating different subjects gives you more of an open minded approach. No one ones to deal with someome that is close minded and just shuts themselves to one point of view. It is an advantage to be open minded, it opens the doors to many different professions and jobs.

Personally I really don't know how my areas can be better integrated. I sat down with many different people and got their opinions. So I feel like my areas and minor were integrated pretty well.

  10. John - Oh really, sorry about that. Well I would love if UCF would add a minor in Zoology. I am very interested about zoology in general. I took an vertebrate anatomy in high school and I enjoyed a lot. Also, a minor in nutrition would be interesting as well. Right now I only have one minor - health sciences, which is pretty interesting.

Do you have any minors that you think would like to add to the IDS major?

  11. Andy,
Good idea. That would be a great way to use what you are learning about. Plus it would be a great way to make some good money while doing something that interests you.

  12. Jenny,
Don't sweat it, your idea was better anyway, and it has sparked some good thought and interaction. I would love to have a minor in nutrition as well, zoology would be cool too. If I could choose one to add I'd pick culinary arts. I've always loved cooking, I'm good at it, but I would love to receive formal training to further refine my skills.

  13. Camilo,
Your right, there are always opportunities in the medical field, there will most likely never be a shortage of people who need medical attention. You mentioned that you were thinking about going into the business end of the medical field, if you could pick any job to have involving that, what would you choose?

  14. jenny,
It is good that you see it the way you do. You are understanding what is going on in our major. Im glad you picked up me saying "all you eggs..." because that is what our major is all about. We are educated in all different fields. Which makes us more integrated then others, and thus will help us get further in a specific position.

  15. andy,
You are right. It is important to integrate your skills all into one. It is also good to be able to know a little about everything as well. Have you ever heard the saying " Jack of all trades, master on none. " I feel like that is what we are trying to accomplish.

I think it was a good idea to sit down and talk to everyone in the medical field and kinda test and see if your major and minors integrate. I can see from your last paragraph that it was a success. I also agree with you that it is an "advantage to be open minded", i feel like that is whats going to get IDS majors ahead of the "game"

  17. Integrating our focuses are a great idea. I am studying health and behavioral and social sciences and hope to use them both in something enviornmental or public health. Hopefully our wide range of subjects will allow us more opportunities and make us more desirable to future jobs and graduate schools!
