Integrating Areas

Mike
Integration is a big part of our IDS major. When we integrate our academics we take different areas and integrate them into one. The good thing about IDS is that we learn about three different areas and have knowledge all over. My minors have helped me reach my final goal of graduation because they are all related. I am majoring in Life/Biomedical sciences, and my minors are physical science and health science. The classes for my minor relate to my major because its all science based. Integrating all of my areas is important professionally because people will know that I’m educated in multiple fields which can help to impress an employer. As far as personal development I enjoy the fact that I’m not just putting all my eggs into one basket. I’m spreading out and learning multiple things about multiple areas. I don’t think that my areas can be any better integrated because they are so similar already. Education is something that is an ongoing experience and IDS is giving me the opportunity to pick my areas of education.

When I think about how I have formed integration within my degree, I think about how my previous majors were all in the field of education. Now that I have changed my major to IDS, with areas in education and life/biomedical science, my thinking is that I have used my areas to work toward a common goal. That goal is to in the future become a science educator. My minors and areas are all working collaboratively to form a solid foundation for me to teach science in the middle and high school level. I believe that it is important to integrate your areas and minors to work towards a common goal, through that you will have a better chance of gaining as much information as possible to help you achieve that goal. Overall I am happy with how I have chosen to integrate my education, because I believe that it will provide valuable information that will help me achieve greatness in the future. One way I think I could better integrate my areas/minors would be to add more minors. I wouldn’t want to take away any of the ones that I currently have, simply adding more that would be related to what I want to achieve could give me a better understanding of those fields. Besides adding more to you education is never a bad idea, and no one can ever take that away from you.

E portfolio

Mike
-How will your e-Portfolio demonstrate your interdisciplinarity?
My E portfolio will demonstrate my interdisciplinarity because I will have a bunch of different papers on different subjects. With different papers on my different areas it demonstrates that I am knowledgeable more then one area. If you read my papers in my E portfolio you will also get to no me and my personality
-What is the audience / purpose you're thinking of using?
As of right now the audience of my E portfolio is primarily I. I am putting it together for an audience of professionals when it becomes time to seek jobs. I am very conscious about what I put in my E portfolio and make sure that I am as professional as possible. The E portfolio is a good way to let people no that I am smart and respectable. I believe that when someone reads my papers and responses in my E portfolio they are going to get to no my personality and that will separate me from others competing for the same job.
-How would you envision your e-Portfolio looking like? What would you like to stand out?
My E portfolio is going to look professional and organized. I already said it, but its going to give people an opportunity to see how I work and a feel for my personality. It is going to be filled with different papers and response papers of all my disciplines. I am going to show that I am knowledgeable and ready for any job at hand.
-What things are you thinking could be used as evidence?
All the papers that I have written is good evidence to put into my E portfolio. Presentation that I have put together for different classes will be a part of it as well. You can put anything in your E portfolio that will be a good representation of you. With everything that I have in my E portfolio I am going to have a great collection of who I am.

How will your e-Portfolio demonstrate your interdisciplinarity?
My e-portfolio will demonstrate my interdisciplinarity because there are reaction papers and other pieces of evidence from many different areas. I have things ranging from Ethenobotany to science education preparation, then the cool thing about it is that then I link all of those things together into my personal interdisciplinarity. Through the works that I have compiled in my e-portfolio I show how I plan to use the information that I have gained to work towards a common goal.

What is the audience / purpose you're thinking of using?
The primary audience that my e-portfolio has is me. I am the one who made it, I am the only one who adds to it, and for the most part I am the only one who has ever read it. However, I am trying to make it as professional and appealing as possible so that I could use it as a tool for future job searches. The things that I have placed in there would in my opinion be great things to show a future employer to show them the quality of my work and research. That is why it is important to take the e-portfolio seriously, one day you may be showing it off to others besides your teachers.

How would you envision your e-Portfolio looking like? What would you like to stand out?
To be perfectly honest I don’t have a vision of what it would look like. In my head my e-portfolio looks just the way it does on my screen, lots of columns and rows filled with word documents and power point presentations. What stands out for me is the quality of my work. Each paper or artifact that I have placed there is something that I feel was a well developed and worth reading. That being said, what I would like to stand out is that everything in the e-portfolio is of high quality.

What things are you thinking could be used as evidence?
The things that I believe could be used as evidence are things that you have put high quality work into. Anything from research papers that you have done to power point presentations that you have worked on to a video that you have made could be used as meaningful evidence, just as long as you have taken pride in creating it. The possibilities are endless; anything that you believe could represent your interdisciplinarity while showing that you are a serious student would be a good piece of evidence. Always keep in mind that someday, someone besides yourself will be looking at the e-portfolio to see what you have chosen to represent yourself.

Explaining the IDS degree

Hello! My name is Michael Grasso. I am 23 years old and I am in the IDS program. I will be graduating this semester, as you know. I have three areas, Life and Biomedical Science, Physical Science , and Health Science. I started coming to UCF in summer of 2004. Most people have a blank look on there faces when you tell them about IDS, but there are plenty of ways to explain to them so there is no confusion. IDS is a way for all students to get a good look at three different areas and make a decision on what strikes your fancy towards the end. For example, it wasn't until I took Anatomy and physiology that I realized what I wanted to do with my life. I am going to be attending Palmer Chiropractic College this January. Some good things about IDS is again, you get to explore different areas in order to make a solid decision on what you really want to do. I cant really think of many disadvantages for IDS except for not liking any of your three areas. I think IDS is a great decision for all students an I'm glad that I choose it.

My name is John Zillmann I am a 27 year old graduating senior here at UCF. My IDS degree is focused in the areas of education and life/biomedical science. I have chosen my minors to be in health science and my 2nd in science education. When people ask me what IDS is I give them on of two answers. The first is, it’s a great degree program that allows students to choose a variety of things to study, and you don’t have to pick just on thing. This is a great advantage in my opinion because we IDS people find our selves with a well rounded education that stretches across as many areas as we like. The second explanation I give people is, its for people like me who have changed their major so many times that you already have enough credits to graduate and they all work together to give me an IDS degree. Personally I typically use the first explanation over the second. I have not yet found any disadvantage of having IDS as a major; the only possible one would be explaining it to everyone who asks what you’re majoring in. The advantages however, stretch as far as the eye can see. With IDS you get the opportunity to tailor fit your education to exactly what you want it to be. There are many different combinations that you could choose from to find a degree that you could use and enjoy earning.

Welcome to IDS-johnandmikesblog

My name is Michael Grasso. I am 23 years old and I am a senior at UCF. I am majoring in IDS with Life/Biomedical Science, Health Science, and Physical science. I choose IDS major because it was the best way for me to reach my goal of going to Chiropractic College in Daytona. I got accepted to the college a month ago and I’m moving in late December. I choose UCF mainly because it was close to my family and because it is in Orlando. The significance of Orlando is that I do water sports and I own half of Oak wakeskates inc. My short-term goals include graduating and passing my last 2 classes and finding a new place to live on the water in Daytona. My long term goals include me graduating from Chiropractic college and growing my company along with starting my own clothing company, Oak Clothing.

My name is John D. Zillmann and I am a 27 year old graduating senior. By now you have probably distinguished that my major is IDS, it’s focused in education and life/biomedical science, with minors in health science and science education.

I choose UCF after I obtained my associates degree from SCC because I had heard from friends that it was a good school, and I could have fun while receiving my education there. I felt that IDS was a good option for me after I had changed my major from elementary education to science education but then felt that the internships were not for me. The IDS degree program that I choose fit right into the courses that I had previously taken. I feel that UCF has delivered an eminent education to me and I have had fun while attending classes here.

Upon graduation, my short term goals are to seek either a middle school science educator position or something else that will pay more. My long goals are to use the information that I have acquired from UCF to be triumphant in whatever career path I choose and to start a family of my own and live a gratifying life.
