My practice interview I thought went very well. I tried to answer the questions myself before clicking on the “coach” to see what she had to say. Mostly my answers were pretty spot on with the coach. I think the questioned asked were very open ended. Each question was specifically asked to get to know my work ethic at the same time as learning about me. The question that was the most surprising to me is when they asked if there was anything I wanted to change about myself. I believe they are trying to find out if you have any major downfalls that might hold you back in a professional environment. I answered that question saying there was nothing that I wanted to change about myself, but if I had to, I would start charismas shopping earlier. The strengths of my responses were letting him know a little about myself while proving to him that I was professional. There is always room for improvement, so yes my answered can be improved, but I was very happy with what I said in my interview. My advice to other when going into an interview would be not to let them know anything personal about you. Make them like you, make them laugh, but never show ant weakness.

I found the perfect interview site to be both fun and frustrating. After I had almost completed the process everything I had typed had disappeared. I felt that I did well with the interview process; it would have been more fun if I had a webcam. I choose not to look at what other people answered for the questions and only used the coach once before I was done. The questions that I found to be hard to answer were the ones that were situation specific, since there wasn’t a specific job that I was interviewing for it was hard to know exactly how I would have answered. What I did was just give a general answer that would then have been tailored to fit into a specific job interview. When I did use the coach option, it proved to be useful. The coach told me techniques that guided me to answering the questions in a way that wouldn’t make me sound closed minded. There is always room for improvement and I believe that if I had taken a little more time to think out my responses then they would have been better. One piece of advice I would give for people about to go into an interview is, don’t talk about your negative attributes. If the interviewer is asking about one of your bad points, don’t give them your worst attribute. I'm not telling you to lie to them, but try to set yourself up to look good, and seriously don’t lie; they will read right through that.

I believe the practice interviews went much better than I had expected. The questions I had issues with were, "don't you think you are over qualified?", and "is this pay right for you?". To the first, it is hard to downplay that, without sounding non-competitive, which I don't want to come off as. To the pay question, I said this is perfect, but what if one day I do want a raise? My answers were pretty close to the ones given, but sometimes I felt mine were better. Only because sometimes the responses didn't really answer the question, I felt they were to ambiguous. I didn't learn much from the coach, but I appreciated the tool. One piece of advice I have gained, is to know your interviewer. Know what they need, what they want, and how you are planning on getting them there.

I think this perfect interview was a very good exercise that I am glad I took. Something like will really help people like myself who are about to graduate and are looking for an entry level position at a company, but do not have experience with job interviews. There were some problematic questions I encountered, but the alternative response and coaching features were a great help because they basically showed me the right direction to take with my responses. I think I could improve with my overall responses because I do not have that much experience with formal job interviews, so I plan on visiting this website again in the near future when applying for jobs. A piece of advice I gained from my interviewing is to respond in a positive manner towards questions and always be aware of the type of question being asked, and what kind of response the interviewer is looking to hear.

Mike,
ReplyDeleteI also answered the questions myself before clicking the coach button because I wanted to answer them in the way I thought was correct, then go and see what improvements I could have. I think I answered them properly for the most part, but I agree with you that there is always room for improvement so I believe that I too have plenty of room to improve on my interviewing process.
John,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that it was difficult to answer some of the question to the best of my ability because there really wasn't a specific job that I was interviewing for, so I had to sort give generalized answers. I also agree that when asked about a negative or bad attribute that I should set myself up in a positive manner, while at the same time trying not to lie, because lying is one of the worst things one can do in an interview.
I did the typing interview instead of video taping myself. Anyways, I found that some of the questions that I got were a little bit tricky. The one I found most tricky was the question, which I had to answer what former colleagues would say about me if the interviewing employer would call them. That question made me think about myself in a whole new perspective. I have never really thought about how people see and look at me. The strength of my responses was that I was honest about my answers. I didn’t lie about my experience or my personal skills, however, I didn’t tell the interviewer everything, I limited the answers about myself yet still was able to make it seem like they were getting a lot of information. I also kept my answers formal and professional, which gave me a professional appearance to the interviewer. I think I could probably improve all my answers, even though I believed I answered them properly.
ReplyDeleteOne piece of advice I would give when doing an interview is to be honest in your responses. You should always be able to stand up for your answers and you should be proud of the things in life you have accomplished. Lying will take you far, but not as far as honesty will.

(Somehow I only ended up getting one link sent to me)
Mike,
ReplyDeleteI also think it is important not to tell much about your personal life when doing an interview. I think one should get a job based on their qualification for the job instead of being rejected or getting the job due to their personal background. I do believe though, that it is important to show qualities of your personality that show that you are able to cooperate and are easy to work with. This is because when a person hires you they tend to go with their first impression, and that is when your personality really must show the best qualities of you. Sometimes, employers can pick some one just based on their personality qualities and not so much based on their educational qualifications.
John,
ReplyDeleteI think you are absolutely right about not lying when doing an interview, because sooner or later your lies will be revealed. Never lie about your qualities, this could make you too qualified for the job you are interviewing for and it can also show that you are not reliable. Somehow the employer will find out that you lied on your interview and about your qualifications, which is never good.
Well I would say it was a perefect exercise guys, but I have not been able to do it because everytime I go to the page my computer acts up. I take blame for it I left it for last minute. What I can say about interview taking is that best thing is to be honest. Being honest is always a huge plus and the interviewer acknowledges that.
ReplyDeleteMike I agree with you about the personal life thing. I feel like once personal life should only be talked about if the interviewer insists on it. My mom was a district manager for many years and she said when she interviewed people, it was all about business. So taking my moms advice when your in an interview you go to handle your business which is to make an amazing first impression, and talk about what makes you qualify for the job they are hiring for.
ReplyDeleteAndy I agree with you about when they ask you about a flaw you have. Best thing you can do is not lie, but not dig yourself in a hole to not get the job. My mom interviewed many people and gave me some tips. She told me the best thing to say is that your flaw is not your strongest attribute, but it is not something that will hold you or the company back.
ReplyDeleteIt is good to answer them by yourself and then click the couch... and im glad you guys did that. also i try to keep my personal information to myself and then later on when you build a solid relationship with your boss let them in..
