professional opportunities & job skills

mike

Interdisciplinarity is used in our everyday life and we might not even know it. I don’t think it is specifically for a job, or school. I think we use it when we leave our houses and venture out into the public every day. I use my interdisciplinarity in my professional life by getting accepted into graduate school. I went to the graduate school and sat down and reviewed my application and displayed my interdisciplinarity right before there very eyes. My professional history has not really been to special. I have not had a “real” job every. I have had plenty of bus boy jobs, waiter, worked at Bills car wash for awhile. I don’t really count these jobs as real jobs, there jobs to hold you over before the real thing comes. My weakest job skills are obviously I am not qualified to do anything. I don’t have a degree yet in college and you can’t do much with a high school degree. My strongest job skill would be me going to graduate school, in order to get that specific job that I will be qualified for. My weak skills is that im not qualified and the only way to improve that would be to stay in school and become a master at my trade. Two professional clubs or organizations that are useful to my chosen career would be business club and chiropractic club. Once I graduate from chiropractic college I plan on starting my own practice so both those clubs are valuable to my success. I did a six month internship in a chiropractors office because I wanted to make 100% sure that this is what I wanted to do with my life. It is very important if you are going to go to graduate school that you shadow what ever the profession is. It could be something you didn’t expect and you might want to change your mind. The six months that I shadowed the chiropractor was the best six months I have had yet and I cant wait to proceed with my education at palmer chiropractic college !

I would say that the way that I have used my interdisciplinarity in my professional life is through multitasking. The majority of the jobs that I have held are jobs with in restaurants. I have worked just about every position possible in a restaurant, from a pizza maker to a bartender to a restaurant manager. Most recently while bartending, I find myself in the position where I have to entertain the guests sitting at my bar while still keeping up with the demand of the rest of the restaurant. Often my bar guests would ask me question related to my education and then our conversations would run off into a science related theme. Through this process I would need to access information from different times in my life while maintaining productivity. Also, because my coworkers know that I am also quite knowledgeable when it comes to health code standards persons from the kitchen would seek my advice while working with foods that they weren’t familiar with. This ability is one of my strongest job skills, the ability to do many things at once at a high level of productivity. What my coworkers would probably say is my worst job skill is not relaxing. Often my coworkers call me an over achiever, I don’t like to be idol at work. If there is something to be done, I will do that instead of standing around talking. Personally I don’t see why others don’t have the same level of productivity that I would expect from people while at work. I'm sure that there are things that I could do to improve myself at work, but if my weakest attribute is a high level of productivity I don’t see why I would want to improve on that. I have never participated in any clubs or organizations nor have I ever done any internships, but I believe that programs such as Junior Achievement are a great opportunity to gain a little experience in the education field. Junior Achievement is also a great way to get to know teachers that you could ask questions about a future career in education.

  1. At this time in my life I am a full time student so I only use my interdisciplinarity in a professional manner during my time in school. So when I am taking notes during class, or completing an assignment, or studying for an exam I use my interdisciplinary knowledge. This is true because while taking an Interdisciplinary Studies major I am forced to learn material from a variety of subjects, such as criminal justice, health, and business in my case. So studying the material, taking notes, and taking exams on a variety of subjects instead of just one is how I use my interdisciplinarity in my professional life. I would say my strongest job skill is multitasking, so I am able to do more than one thing at once, which can help me in the future in a lot of possible jobs that I may have. My weakest job skill is probably group work, because so much of the time I am completing assignments or doing work on my own, and every once in a while there will be a group assignment, so I have more experience working by myself in various projects. To develop and improve my weak skill I can probably go out of my way to do more things in a group, such as maybe attempting to form a study group for classes or try to form a group for brainstorming topics for a paper that’s due in class. Two professional clubs or organizations that would be useful to my chosen career would probably be Business Professionals of America and the American Management Association because I would like to go to a graduate school for business and then hopefully acquire a job in that department so these two business associations would be useful to my chosen career. I have not had any internships or externships yet, however I would like to participate in one to assist me with my professional development and give me experience for the future.

  2. I would say that my IDS major is most used for multi tasking and productivity as well. I am a highly motivated individual and never bored. I am on board for two sports clubs, a leadership council, and I have an internship. Although I am busy, I somehow manage to make it work, and I am happy while doing it. The things I learn in my clubs I often time use in my learning, or vice versa. If I have a project in class I often mold it around something I already know alot about, usually the environment or cycling. I think seeing the relation ships in things are important. Everything relates in my eyes.

Mike, I think I am going to shadow an lawyer before I go to grad school. You are right, I should know that is what I want to do before I dive into school!

  3. Honestly, I haven’t used my interdisciplinary in the professional life yet. I only use it when I study or things that I do for school. Basically I can’t relate my interdisciplinary with my professional life skills, since I haven’t worked since last year (the year I changed my major to Interdisciplinary Studies). However, in school I use and integrate my different areas of study daily. Since my areas are all related to each other, I find it more than natural to connect them to each other and use knowledge I have obtained from them into each other. Since I have only worked once in my life I can’t evaluate my strongest and weakest job skills. My last employer emphasized my good leadership skills and that I am well-organized person. I guess that those skills are my strongest ones. My weak skills are that I can’t take criticism and orders from someone too well. I am still struggling with the relationship I have with my coach. Even though it is getting better, I am usually talking back to her. I was taught by my parents to always do what I want and stand up for my own opinion, and never let anyone tell me what to do. I guess that that is my weakest skill, which I really need to improve upon since it is important to be able to take order and take criticism in a good way.

Two professionals organizations that would be useful for my future carrier are AAOM (American Association of Orthopaedic Medicine) and AMA (American Medical Association). I think these two organizations directly connect to my future goal in life to become a doctor and with my pre-med track in the interdisciplinary areas. Joining these organizations would help me get helpful information and connections within the medical field that will be useful later on.

I haven’t done any internship related to my future carrier yet nor related to my interdisciplinary study major. However, I believe that getting an internship related to my major would help me to develop my professional skills. I’m looking for an internship already for next year at a hospital. I think that internship would be good for my resume.

  4. Mike,

I feel the same as you. I feel that I am not qualified to do anything right at the moment. Even though I have had opportunities to get internships for 3 years now at hospitals I decided to not take them, mostly because I have been busy playing tennis during the summers. Now when I look back I kind of regret that I didn’t take them, since it would be good for my resume. Also, I feel I did the right thing of not taking them. Instead, I had fun and traveled all over Europe. Well, hopefully I get that internship next summer at the hospital.

  5. Mike,

I have the same weak job skills as you, I have never had a "real" job either. A few other "non real" jobs as you described but none of the real thing. So I too am pretty much not qualified to do anything either. Thats why I have chosen to attend graduate school as well, so I can become a master at my trade and become very good at a "real" job when it comes my way. As of now I am still not sure what I want to do so I guess I'll wait until graduate school to find my first internship then figure it out from there on.

  6. John,

I too would say my strongest job skill would be to multitask, however I have used it mostly throughout my school career rather than a job career. I have also worked in restaurants as a bus boy and would have to multitask sometimes while fulfilling the requests of my shift manager, restaurant manager, and waiters all at the same time, however for the most part I multitask school activities. Such as, having to research things on multiple subjects and complete assignments simultaneously for all my different areas and minor, because at this point in my life school is my profession.

  7. John,

Don’t you feel very knowledgeable when people are asking you about science related things as well as you can talk about so many things from different areas?

I for sure do. I feel that I have gotten a broad common of knowledge from many different types of areas. I can talk about pretty much anything and I love it. Some people that I have met have told me that they are impressed about my broad knowledge in different sciences and I give IDS all credits for that. IDS is great in that way that it broaden your knowledge. I have never regret that I declared IDS as my major.

  8. Personally I have not used my interdisciplinary studies skills in a professional manner. I have never had a real job. My whole life my job was to play soccer which is what helps me pay for school, and work soccer camps during the summer. This does not mean I have not used the skills I have attained from this major. Eventhough I have not been able to use my skills at a professional level, I use them in school. Since entering this major I have been able to intergrate my classes with each other, which makes them easier to comprehend. Eventhough I have not had a real job in my life, I would day that my strong point will be leadership. I say this because I have always been a leader on the soccer field. I like being the person that moitvates people and the one to take the blame when things go wrong. For my weakest job skill I would say is not having a real job. I say that because with real jobs comes real experience. Experience is something you can't teach but something you gain. Two major organizations that would open many opportunities for my future would be American Medical Association, and Business Professionas of America.

  9. Mike I also have the same weak job skills as you. I have never had a real job, or any of the jobs you named. My whole life I just focused on playing soccer so it can help me pay my way in college. So personally I have no experience. My goal is to attend school after receiving my Bachelors and get a Masters. Hopefully with this I can obtain more knowledge and skills towards my areas of studies, to be able to receive the adequate skills for a real job. Also during that time I hope I can apply for internships while studying. I think this would be the perfect way to get a real job.

  10. John,

I agree with you when you mentioned that this major has helped you learn how to multitask. I'm a student athlete, and everyday I have to multitask. Last year before joining this major it was hard for me, I just had so many things to do. Now that I have been part of this major, everything seems to be working out for me and falling into place. My usual day consist of class, lunch, practice, and studying. Now that is some multitasking.

  11. Jenny,
I totally agree with you IDS gives you broad knowledge of many things. I almost feel like an expert in many things! Many people are impressed with my knowledge in health as well as in the environment, I never would have been able to combine the two without this education option!

  12. Camilo, I

sort of know where you are coming from and the IDS major does help. I am really active in two sports clubs. Granted I am not on a team team, but it is still a lot of work. I feel for you!

  13. Andy,
Good, school should be your profession at this point. I wish I didn't have to work and could spend more time on school. It is hard to do all those things at once, while keeping everyone happy, but if you can that now, just imagine how well you will be able to do it once youve graduated.

  14. Jenny,
Ditto! I love what IDS has done for me. Not only has it given us a well rounded education in different areas, but they are in exactly what we designed for ourselves. Never lose that passion to learn and it will take you places.

  15. Camilo,
It sounds like your weeks are filled with busy days. It also sounds like you have a good control of your priorities and are multitasking well. It’s too bad you can’t combined some of those activities, to give yourself a little more free time.

  16. John,

Yes my weeks are extremely busy. It took me a while to leran how to multitask. It made it easy to multitask once I got my priorities organized, and well sometimes being an athlete comes with some sacrifice, but I don't mind because I'm doing something that I love.
